Ice caps around the world reflect back 70 percent of the solar radiation, while the oceans reflect only 30 percent and absorb the rest. However the reflected radiation cannot escape because of the thickening of the atmospheric ring around the earth because of the carbon dioxide being emitted by burning of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal. The resulting green-house effect is causing global warming, which in turn is shrinking the ice caps and reducing their ability to reflect solar radiation. A vicious circle, one thing leading to the other while we sleep.
