KARACHI - The Irrigation Department has formed a committee to hold an inquiry into the events that lead to a breach in Rohri canal on last Sunday, at a time when the province is facing acute shortage of water.

Farmers and villagers on Monday held demonstrations across the province against the shortage of water. The breach in Rohri Canal left houses inundated, besides damaging standing crops. The chief minister had taken notice of the breach in the canal and ordered the authorities to plug it immediately.

The inquiry committee is comprised of Irrigation Chief Engineer Ghulam Mustafa Dahri, Baghar Circle Hyderabad Superintending Engineer Abdul Rehman Nizamani and Irrigation Department Director Monitoring and Evaluation Abdul Aziz Memon.

The committee will also look into whether adequate preventive measures were taken to avoid occurrence of the breach. It will fix the responsibility for the losses on delinquent personnel. The committee will its preliminary report to the Irrigation Department within seven days.
