LAHORE - The former captain and coach of Pakistan team Zaheer Abbas feels that Umar Akmal has immense talent but failed to show his skills in the highest stage of the sport due to his wrong shot selection.

Umar has been dropped from the Test squad, which will take on Sri Lanka next month and there has been a lot of criticism on the young batsman from Lahore about his shot selection. However, he has been retained in the limited-overs squad.

The 21-year-old cricketer is predicted for greatness by a number of cricket analysts all around the world and there is a strong school of thought that Umar is the most talented batsman produced by the country in the last 15 years.

Some pundits believe that Umar has reasonable averages in all the three formats of the game and has played a number of match-winning knocks for the country. He bats way too low in the batting order and this is the prime reason why, he has so far struggled to establish himself as a prolific batsman.

The ‘Asian Bradman’ said that the young batsman usually gets carried away in the longer version of the game and feels that he will have to take care of his temperament in order to excel in international cricket. Zaheer stated that Umar Akmal has spoken to me before and I have explained this problem to him as well.

The great batsman is also looking forward to see the progress of fast bowler, Sami who has been recalled to the national team after a couple of years. Zaheer commented that the selectors made the right call to give another opportunity to the fast-bowler from Karachi.

Zaheer Abbas said that Twenty-20 skipper Hafeez’s future elevation to captain from vice-captain will be based on his performance in all three types of formats.

“Hafeez is the right choice as T-20 Captain as currently he is the only choice. He is scoring runs and taking wickets for the team. If he performs well then obviously that will be the right choice in future as well for the captaincy,” Zaheer said.
