MIRPUR (AJK) -Indian troops continued violation of ceasefire along the Line of Control in Rawalakot district of AJK without any provocation by targeting the civilian population in the district for more than fourth time in the last 18 days. “Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing with small arms on four Indian posts along the LoC in Krishna Ghati and Battal sectors of Rawalakot district from 9.40pm Monday night,” official sources from Rawalakot  said.

Pakistani troops guarding the Line of Control fired back silencing the guns of the enemy resulting in intermittent exchanges of fire and the firing exchanges continued for a brief period, the sources told this  scribe on Wednesday quoting reports reaching from the forward areas of the district.

There was no report of any death, injury or damage to anyone on this side of the LoC due to the unprovoked firing from across the LoC. This was about fourth incident of ceasefire violation by the Indian troops in the past 18 days along the LoC, the sources said.

ELECTIONS: Sardar Javed Ayub, the nominee of Welfare Panel for the top slot of President, clinched victory by securing 1,008 votes in elections to the AJK Gazetted Officers Welfare Association.

Ayub defeated his only rival Mansoor Maqbool of the Friends Panel who bagged 767 votes, according to reports. Similarly, Syed Salim Gardezi, candidate of the Welfare Panel for the office of Secretary General of the Association, won the election by securing 1,075 votes against his only rival Tahir Mumtaz of the Friends panel who bagged only 673 votes. The elections were held in all ten districts of AJK simultaneously for the constitutional three-year term.

"Similarly Salim Gardeizi of Secretarial group of AJK govt. , the candidate for  Secretary General-ship of the Organisation from the triumphant Welfare Panel won the election in Mirpur district securing 117 votes against his nearest rival candidate Tahir Abbasi of the Friends Panel", the Presiding officer added.

The polling to elect the two office bearers was held at the District Council Hall in Mirpur according to the schedule in a peaceful manner. In the mean time KD Chaudhry, a grade BPS-16 Taxation Officer of the Municipal Corporation Mirpur came to the polling station along with some of his associates and started raising objection on validity and holding of the polls and the voters list with a strong protest over non-enlistment of his name in the voters list.

During the course of the episode, all of sudden KD Chaudhry allegedly lifted the ballot box and ran away off the polling station. Police rushed behind him to nab from his official residential quarter in the nearest Staff Colony where he was not found. And in the meantime, he himself appeared in the City Police Station along with the ballot box and handed it over to the police. The ballot box was brought back to the polling station and the polling was resumed till the stipulated hours in the evening in peaceful manner. Later the election results were announced as above.
