New contours of Pak-China friendship

Pakistan and China enjoy a very cordial relationship and they are considered as an all weather friends. China is an emerging economic superpower. The recent global financial crises have affected the strongest economies as well as developed countries and most of the countries have also suffered due to international economic depression, but China is one of the countries which had a tiny impact on its economy. The foundation of diplomatic ties that were laid down 57 years ago on May 21, 1951 perpetually grew without any troubles and suspicions. The second high-level exchanges were made in February 1964 and in March 1965 respectively that gave impetus to the growth of mutual ties between the two countries. Both the countries exchanged their first high level visits in October and December 1956 at the peak of the Cold War by witnessing the spirit of the Bandung Conference, aiming at promoting peace and cooperation, and development among the developing countries of the South. The financial crises and the role of international donor agencies also require joint steps to overcome this financial market turmoil. China is the country which can play a vital role in this troublesome situation. It has always proved its significance and loyalty towards Pakistan. The roots of bilateral friendship between the two countries are very deep rooted and this friendship has always proved trustworthy in difficult times. Both countries have the same stance on the international as well as regional issues especially on the war against terrorism. Pakistan always looks towards China in any difficult situation and in recent financial turmoil' Pakistan has been assured by Chinese leadership of their cooperation and help. The rapid progress of China in every field especially science and technology, industries, mines and minerals, space science, information technology, agriculture and energy sector is an eye-opener for the rest of world and now China has become a threat for developed countries and a large number of Chinese companies are operating in various western countries. Skilled labour force of China is its real asset. Undoubtedly, China is leading the world due to commitment of its policy makers and skilled labour force who are genuinely committed to their work. Sino-Pak relations are based on ideas, principles, and doctrines. In the wake of the global financial meltdown, the prestige of China has further enhanced. The country has vowed to help ward-off Pakistan's economic crunch 'within its (China's) capacity'. This seems to be a very 'soft' message by China that would like to see developing Pakistan through self-reliance and through its own means rather creating an unnecessary reliance, and dependence on foreign means. Although China is Pakistan's long standing trusted friend, but it is regretted that Pakistanis have never learnt from China, even not from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, or Malaysia. It is a high time for us to take the examples of self-reliance of these socialist and capitalist economies. By following that, we will enter into a much more meaningful partnership with China. The history of Pak-China joint projects is quite thrilling and entailing. The completion of the Karakorum Highway, the first phase of the Deep-Sea Gwadar Port, laying down the railways track between Hawailian-Khunjrab, the Thal Coal project, Saindak gold and copper project, and a number of defence projects are some of the shining examples of the ever-expanding economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries over the past six decades. There is an expectation that China is going to join the mammoth energy projects with Pakistan such as the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project and the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) gas pipeline project, thus linking China with South West Asia and the Gulf. It is in this backdrop that our hardworking, zealous and committed Chief Minister, Punjab Shahbaz Sharif is visiting China. He is a man of new ideas, dimensions and hopes and his revolutionary steps have changed the appearance of the province within few a months. He works day and night for the welfare of the people. Even the critics of Shahbaz have praised his poor-friendly policies publicly and he is considered as a political asset. The visit of the CM to China has great significance. The Chinese investors are very keen to invest in Pakistan especially in Punjab. We hope that the CM would be able to attract the them, especially in energy, industries, livestock and dairy development, agriculture and information technology sectors. To meet the food needs of nearly 165 million people is a great challenge and Punjab is facing the burden to meet the food requirement of the other provinces. It is also worth mentioning that per acre yield in the agriculture sector is very low and China has potential to help us to enhance the per acre yield as well as reduce production cost. The visit of our dynamic CM would also focus on the agriculture sector especially transfer of new technology.
