At least nine persons were killed and 24 others including 11 women injured in separate violent incidents and road mishaps occurred in different areas.
According to details, in Sargodha three passengers died and 22 others received multiple injuries when a speeding van overturned near to village Mitha Lak on Sargodha-Bhalwal Road the other night. According to details, driver of Sargodha-bound passenger van, coming from Jhelum, lost control of the vehicle due to speeding. Resultantly the van overturned, killing three passengers identified as Faisal Raza, Ali Nawaz and Qadir on the spot while 22 other including 11 women sustained injuries and were shifted to DHQ Hospital.
Similarly in Hafizabad, a young man was crushed to death when a recklessly driven truck hit his bike on Sheikhupura-Hafizabad Road near Bhoon Village, about 8-km from here.
According to Rescue 1122 source, deceased Mehmood Anwar Qamar of Green Town Lahore was returning to Lahore after meeting his relatives in Hafizabad on a bike (LEN-5079). When he reached near Bhoon village, a speeding truck (KBA-5486), coming from the opposite direction, hit his motorcycle, killing him on the spot. Rescue 1122 shifted the dead body to the city morgue for autopsy. The police have arrested the driver and impounded the truck.
In Bahawalnagar, an aspirant candidate for the local bodies elections along with his son was gunned down in the limits of Saddr Police here the other day.
According to details, Shafi Mohammad Lamberdar, a resident of Godhowala was on the way back home with his son Musawar. In the meantime unidentified assailants ambushed them, killing both the man and his son on the spot.
It is to be noted that Shafi had filed nomination paper for the slot of vice chairman UC 44 Malikpura. The Saddr Police handed over the dead bodies to the family and started investigation.
Meanwhile, in Toba Tek Singh, a motorcyclist was killed and another riding pillion, sustained critical wounds when a tractor-trolley hit the motorcycle in Gojra here the other night.
According to the Gojra Police, deceased Ashraf of Chak 366/JB and Zahid of Chak 364/JB were on the way on a motorcycle when a tractor-trolley, coming from the opposite direction, hit the bike. Both sustained critical wounds and were admitted to Gojra THQ Hospital where Ashraf succumbed to his wounds while Zahid was referred to Faisalabad Allied Hospital in critical condition.
In Kamalia former municipal committee chairman and nazim Sheikh Hameed Ahmad died after protracted illness. Scores of politicians, parliamentarians and citizens attended his funeral.
In another incident, an alleged dacoit Awais, a resident of Islampura Toba who was seriously injured in an encounter with police in Gojra, succumbed to bullet wounds in Gojra THQ Hospital.
He along with two other accomplices was arrested after a shootout when they were fleeing after looting two villagers on Gojra-Mochiwala Road.
Anti-polio campaign: A five-day anti-polio campaign will start from November 18 under which children up to five years of age will be vaccinated across the district.
District Officer Health Dr Abdul Hameed said that all available resources would be utilised to make the campaign a success. The campaign focus would be on high-risk union councils (UCs), he said, adding that special teams would cover all entry and exists points of the district so that no child could remain unattended.
He said that no negligence on part of the officials concerned would be tolerated during the anti-polio campaign.
Meanwhile, DCO Dr Farah Masood, EDO Health Dr Ijaz Haider and DO Health Dr Abdul Hamid inquired after the health of two polio-affected kids of Kamalia. The children, nine-month-old Muawaya and one-year-old Bushra, were declared as polio-infected.
The officers assured their parents that both would be treated free of cost. The DCO also sought a report from the EDO Health regarding polio vaccination campaign.
