Amjad Saleemi takes charge as IGP Punjab

Amjad Javed Saleemi took charge as Punjab police chief on Monday.

He took charge as Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) a day after the by-polls and the federal government’s decision regarding the appointment of the police chief went in effect.

Amjad Saleemi has replaced Tahir Khan as IGP Punjab.

Last week Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on suspended the government's decision to replace Punjab police chief Tahir Khan, stating that the police chief replacement would be considered a violation of the ECP rules due to the by-polls. 

On September 9, Amjad Javed Saleemi appointed the Inspector General Punjab (IGP) Police and a  notification to this effect has also been issued by the Establishment Division.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (R) Sardar Muhammad Raza seek details pertaining to Tahir Khan's removal as IGP Punjab from the Election Commission Secretariat.

The ECP also asked the secretary establishment to halt the transfer. According to election commission officials, the police chief cannot be replaced due to the upcoming by-polls. 

Amjad Saleemi replaced Tahir Khan who served as the Punjab IGP for a period of one month and two days. 

He has earlier also served as Sindh's police chief. Amjad Saleemi joined the civil services on November 1, 1986. He belongs to the 14th Common division and his domicile is Faisalabad. 

He was previously a grade 22 officer of Police Service of Pakistan, serving as IG National Highways and Motorway Police (NH&MP).
