ISLAMABAD - Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi's resignation from the position of Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly is a sign of confidence-building measure between two major factions of Pakistan Muslim League, PML-Q and PML-N. In a surprise move, Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, on Sunday tendered his resignation from the prestigious slot without giving any satisfactory reasons for his stepping down. Party sources, however, claim that the resignation came just to please the PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. "Elahi has vacated the slot for PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, as a confidence-building measure (CBM) between both the factions of PML", said a PML-Q leader seeking not to be named. "This goodwill gesture hints at the developments between PML-N and PML-Q ties. Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Sayed is playing a leading role in bringing Chaudhrys and Sharifs closer and this is a major breakthrough in a bid for establishing ties," he further said. The two parties have been having strained relations since Pervez Musharraf's coup. The PML-Q leader was of the view that the resignation was meant to assure Sharifs that Chaudhrys were ready to reconcile with the Sharifs and with this resignation, they had sacrificed the slot of Opposition Leader for the PML-N. This is pertinent to mention here that there was no precedent of changing the Leader of Opposition slot in country's parliamentary history. The recent controversy emerged after the PML-N leadership announced to leave the coalition and sit on the opposition benches. PML-Q has 54 MNAs while PML-N has the strength of 91 members in the National Assembly. In his letter, addressed to Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza, the PML-Q leader stated that he was stepping down just to ensure a smooth working of the Parliament. "While I was lawfully and democratically elected as Leader of Opposition in accordance with the accepted norms, but I have noticed that recent events are perhaps forcing you to reconsider this issue. As you are aware, my notification as Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly was made after duly ascertaining all facts by you," said Elahi in his letter.  "Now it seems that this slot is being sought by those who till September 13 were part of the federal government coalition and who, interestingly, remain allies in government with the same party in the province of Punjab, which they plan to oppose at the center. Despite this dichotomy, I do not want to get involved in any controversy. In the interest of smooth working of the Parliament and with a view not to embarrass your position as Speaker, I hereby tender my resignation as Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly," said the letter. Talking to the media, Mushahid Hussain Sayed said the resignation had nothing to do with his party's talks with the PPP.  "The resignation has been sent after the claim made by the PML-N against this slot. The PML-Q has decided to tender the resign just to avoid any controversy," he said and added that his party was in touch with all the leading political parties.
