As new government announced an increase in salaries and special relief allowance for the salaried class in its budget (2008/9). For the third consecutive time, NADRA authorities did not obey the orders of government. That is the latest in a series of actions against NADRA employees by their management. For instance, NADRA did not issue special dearness allowance announced by previous government nor allowed any increase in salaries effected by the previous government in the years 2004, 2005 and 2007. The poor employees of NADRA were hoping the new government will give them some relief as NADRA is the only government organization working eight hours a day. Besides we are working hard on projects like ANR, NADRA-Kiosks and ERRA, which have been commended by organization like UN, World Bank etc for their efficiency and contribution. Despite all this, neither our salaries have been raised nor our contractual staff regularized (which the government ordered but our chairman refused to implement). The government had ordered return of army personnel to the armed forces except for the 20% quota reserved for retired army personnel in civil jobs. But all key posts in NADRA are still held by either retired or serving armymen. -SHAH JEHAN AKHTAR, Peshawar, via e-mail, September 11.
