ISLAMABAD - Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has so far not included any new inquiry officer into the team probing Haj scam in place of its former Director Hussain Asghar who has been posted as Inspector General (IG) of Gilgit-Baltistan by the federal government. Additional Director General (ADG) Javed Ali Bukhari heads FIAs team probing irregularities in the mismanagement of Haj affairs while Hussain Asghar was its senior member. FIA officials are of the view that the transfer of Hussain Asghar, a PSP officer known for his integrity and honesty, would be a major blow to investigations into the Haj scam. They further informed that Hussain Asghar was the only investigation officer in the team who never succumbed to the pressure of any politician, bureaucrat or even journalist, allegedly involved in the Haj scam, and even Interior Minister Rehman Malik. Hussain Asghar was not available for comments, as his cell number was switched off for many hours. An official of Establishment Division wishing not be named said that the government removed Hussain Asghar from the Haj scam investigations on the pattern of Zafar Ahmed Qureshis disassociation from NICL scam earlier when he had been appointed Managing Director (MD) National Police Foundation (NPF) for this purpose. The Supreme Court of Pakistan once while hearing the Haj scam had observed that it would look into the matter if Hussain Asghar was removed from the investigations. At that time some news were in the air that Asghar was being disassociated from the investigations. The sources close to the office of FIAs Director General (DG) Malik Mohammad Iqbal informed that Interior Minister Rehman has been using different pressure tactics on the investigation team of Haj scam to get the results of his own choice. An official of FIA on the condition of anonymity said that some days back, the Interior Minister amazingly directed the DG through telephone to dismiss all officers of Haj scam investigation team including Hussain Asghar and this, according to him, was a pressure trick used by the minister. He further said that the DG was astonished to hear the verbal orders of the minister, as he had no powers to do so. Rehman Malik did not pick up the call when contacted for comments.
