LAHORE – Sugarcane Growers Association Convener Javed Malik, in a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Najam Sethi, has said that sugarcane crushing season 2012-13 has now ended and some influential growers have got their payments of sugarcane supplied to sugar mills across the country but the pity is that small growers who are over 90pc of grower community running for pillar to post for their legitimate payments and are being humiliated by the management of respective sugar mills.

According to a press release issued here on Monday, he said he has received a lot of complaints from across the Punjab against sugar mills as these mills are not paying their dues to farmers according to CPRs.

He further said that even some CPRs are due in December but payments have not been made by these mills, instead millers are exploiting poor small sugarcane crowers through middlemen. For instance, he said, if value of CPR is one lac, the growers are being offered only Rs 80,000 cash by middlemen hovering outside mills gate.

This malpractice is going on in almost every sugar mill of Punjab, he added.
