RAWALPINDI – A 45-year-old convicted prisoner in murder case languishing in Adyala Jail died under mysterious circumstances, informed sources here on Monday.

However, the jail authorities claimed that the prisoner died of cardiac arrest. The deceased was later identified as Tariq Mehmood son of Mehndi Khan, from Chakori village, Gujrat.

According to sources, Tariq Mehmood, the prisoner, had murdered a man in Gujrat’s village Chakori and later was arrested by police and sent him to jail. Later, a court of law awarded him capital punishment. The sources informed that the convicted prisoner found dead in jail’s hospital yesterday (Sunday) in the evening under mysterious circumstances.

Deputy Superintendent Adyala Jail Chaudhry Ilyas Ahmed, however, when contacted to know his official version, said that the convicted prisoner died of cardiac arrest. Sharing more details, Ch stated that the jail authorities were counting the prisoners in the barracks in routine on Sunday evening when the prisoners reported to jail wardens that Tariq was feeling severe pain in his chest. “Tariq took his breath last while he was being shifted to jail hospital,” the deputy added.

Upon a question, Ilyas replied that a court of law awarded death punishment to Tariq in a murder case but later Lahore High Court converted his death sentence into life imprisonment.
