LAHORE-Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has ordered provision of quality education and better treatment facilities to the children of industrial workers and directed that comprehensive proposals be submitted to him for this purpose. While addressing a meeting of Social Security and Workers Welfare Board, at CM's Secretariat, here on Friday, he also directed that a report be sent to him after holding negotiations with concerned agencies for construction of more hospitals and health insurance schemes for labourers. The meeting considered some measures to be taken for the welfare of labourers in detail. Minister for Labour, Muhammad Ashraf Sohna, Chief Secretary, Javed Mahmood and Commissioner Punjab Employees Social Security Institution were present in the meeting. Shahbaz Sharif said that workers were the backbone of industrial sector and the goal of increasing industrial production cannot be achieved without betterment of workers. He directed that medical and educational facilities be ensured for laborers as well as their children. He said that Labour Department should identify state land for the construction of more schools. He also issued instructions for better coordination between Education and Labour Departments for improving educational facilities. The CM sought proposals for making operational the hospital constructed in Okara with the cooperation of welfare society. He directed that the proposals be finalized and submitted to him for setting up orthopaedic centers in different hospitals besides contacting private hospitals for health insurance cover. He expressed satisfaction over medical and health facilities extended to the labourers by Social Security and Workers Welfare Board and asked for proposal and recommendations for further improving these facilities. Earlier, the Chief Minister was informed during briefing that seven hospitals are operating in the province under Punjab Employees Social Security Institution where latest medical facilities are available to the industrial workers. Moreover, a number of projects are being implemented for the upgradation of existing hospitals. It was further informed that in addition to construction of 50-bed hospitals in District Rahim Yar Khan and Khushab and later increasing their capacity to 100 beds each, construction of new hospitals in Hassan Abdal, Chakwal and Nankana Sahib where the number of industrial workers is more than 10000 are among these projects. It was further informed that 32 schools are operating under Workers Welfare Board where 25000 students are studying. The matric results of these schools have been satisfactory and free transport facilities are also being provided to the children studying in these schools. The Chief Minister directed to further improve the academic standard as well as syllabus of these institutions.
