Lawyers in lawlessness

Lawyers from all over Pakistan took active part in the restoration of CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry. The historic struggle of lawyers which continued for two years before finally achieving its goal would be writ in golden words in our history. The lawyers played the role of the dynamic lead in this movement with the help of civil society and media. The lawyers showed complete unity during the struggle. They appeared to be a well-organized group that are highly educated, know the law and are respected in the society. The recent behaviour of the lawyers is surprising, though. In a few isolated incidents, a clutch of lawyers beat up a police officer and then attacked a media man wielding a camera, injuring him. These are things one does not expect from lawyers. They are respected in society and incidents like these would only serve to lower their dignity. The case is now in a court of Lahore. One feels no one should be deemed above the law. -AMIRA AMIN, Lahore, via e-mail, August 9.
