LAHORE – Agriculture Minister Malik Ahmad Ali has said 11 million saplings would be planted during the tree plantation campaign in the monsoon season.

Presiding over a departmental meeting here on Wednesday, Ali said of the 11 million saplings, four million would be planted on the land of the Forests Department, 0.65 million on the land of other government departments, 1.25 on the land of the armed forces and 5.10 million on private land.

The agriculture minister said 260 sale points had been set up by the Forests Department for providing saplings to the people. He said the number of trees would be increased in the next few years from 22 to 28 per acre.

Ali said tree plantation could play a vital role in economic development besides eradication of environmental pollution. He stressed the people to play an active role in the tree plantation campaign. The minister also asked officers of the Forests Department to create awareness among people to achieve the desired results.

Forests Secretary Shahnawaz Badar, Forest Director General (Central Zone) Rana Shabbir, Forest (Extension) Director Tariq Mahmood and other officers attended the meeting.
