QUETTA - At least three people, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and Constable, were killed and six others including Inspector sustained injuries in an attack on a police van in Berat area of Awaran, some 500 kms away from provincial capital, on Wednesday.

A Balochistan Constabulary van was carrying salaries of the department was on way from Uthal to Awaran when unknown armed men ambushed it in Berat area and opened indiscriminate firing.

Resultantly, two police men and a passerby were killed on the spot and six other policemen sustained injuries. The attackers looted Rs 2.8 million and escaped. The security personnel and police rushed to the spot soon after the incident and cordoned off the area.

The bodies were taken to Awaran for autopsy and the injured were taken to Uthal for treatment.

The deceased were identified ASI Abdullah and BC Constable Israr while the passerby was identified as Riaz Ahmed.

The injured were identified as Inspector Muhammad Hameed, cashier Muhammad Tahir, driver Zafar Ali, Ghous Bhaksh, Ijaz, Hatim Ali and Muhammad Ameen.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A case has been registered against the unknown persons and investigation is under way.
