MQM gives govt 10 days to clarify position

KARACHI - Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee on Wednesday demanded of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of Pakistan Peoples Party to explain in 10 days whether Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirzas provocative remarks against MQM were the act in his personal capacity or policy of PPP. It was decided in an emergency meeting of the MQM Rabita Committee that took place in MQM International Secretariat London and Pakistan simultaneously that if it is the policy of PPP then MQM would be free to take a decision about remaining in the coalition by consulting with its workers, office-bearers and the public. The meeting discussed the rapidly changing political situation, separation of JUI-F from the coalition, the attitude of the ruling party towards MQM, speech of Provincial Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza against MQM and the efforts of MQM for promoting unity among Muslims during the month of Muharram and the future course of action for the party. MQM leader Raza Haroon while talking to newsmen after a joint meeting of MQM Rabita Committee said that the meeting condemned the unwarranted inflammatory speech of Provincial Home Minister and baseless allegations against MQM and termed it a conspiracy to sow the seeds of hatreds between the permanent residents of the province and a nefarious attempt the divide Sindh. It was said in the meeting that if bigoted and inflammatory speech of the Home Minister was not the policy of the ruling party then why no notice was taken by President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani so far. The meeting unanimously called upon the leadership of the Peoples Party and its Central Executive Committee to explain if the inflammatory speech of the Home Minister and the repulsive language used by him in order to create hatred among the people of Sindh were the personal opinion of the Home Minister that had nothing to do with the policy of the party. It was declared in the meeting that MQM opposed all steps that were against the interest of the people of Sindh despite being in government for five years in the past without considering about the fallouts. It was stressed in the meeting that MQM being a democratic political party believed in resolving political difference through mutual understanding and negotiations. MQM does not resort to emotionalism for taking important decisions instead it takes into consideration the wishes of the people in the larger interest of the country. MQM considers the difference of opinion between allied parties as an essence of democracy and it is because of this that MQM did not support any steps of the government taken against the interest of the people. The meeting termed the separation of JUI-F from the coalition as their democratic right and called upon the government to treat the allied parties as equal partners and refrain from inappropriate attitude. It further asked the government to remove the reservations of the allied parties in the interest of democracy. It was also said that maintaining peace and tranquillity during the month of Muharram was the top most priority of MQM and it will continue to promote religious and sectarian harmony between people.
