Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited will suspend the gas supply to CNG outlets and industry in Punjab for unlimited period from today (Wednesday) to mitigate the demand of domestic consumers, who are currently facing severe shortage of gas.

Company spokesperson told The Nation that almost 875 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of gas has been diverted to Punjab’s domestic sector to meet its increasing demand. “The SNGPL has 1185MMCFD gas in its network. KPK is consuming 310MMCFD and remaining is being utilized in Punjab,” he said.

“In view of considerable reduction in R-LNG swap, supply of R-LNG to CNG sector in Punjab shall be suspended with effect from December 16, 2015, till further orders. The gas will not be available at CNG outlets in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Multan, Gujranawala, Gujrat, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Bahawalpur regions.”

The gas supply to textile and general industry is already suspended. But some officials in the company said the issue of low pressure of the gas in domestic sector will prevail during next two months.

“The company is unable to meet the demand of its consumers with present gas in its network,” they said.

Meanwhile, the residents in the areas of Shahdrah, Walled City, Samanabad, Ali Town, Johar Town, Township, Bagwanpura, Garhi Shaho, Mozang and Ichra are facing severe problems to cook food at their homes because of shortage of gas, especially during morning and at night around 8pm to 10pm.

“We are bringing food from hotel especially at night. Gas is not available in our house during night,” said Syed Hassan, a resident of Ichra.
