Ex-WAPDA Chairman Engr Shamsul Mulk has stated in a seminar on 'Electric power stability and requirement of large dams' (The Nation 28-1-2009) that small dams are no substitute for large dams. He has further said that power generated by a large dam would be priced at only Rs 0.50 per unit. While supporting the building of both Bhasha and Kalabagh dams at the same time he has said that only a few people with vested interests oppose Kalabagh dam and that government should speak the truth, not hide facts from the public. The government ought to listen to sane voices like that of Engr Shamsul Mulk and prefer hydel dams over IPPs that would generate unaffordable power that some reckon could be as costly as Rs 16 per unit. We have waited too long and should not play with the destiny of nation by delaying the mega dams which are the panacea for the shortage of water and power that is destroying our agricultural and industrial bases. -DR M.
