KARACHI - Two new units of Audiometery and Child Ventilator Units have been established in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital involving a cost of Rs 7.5 million. At the Audiometry Unit, the disease in children born with hearing impairment can be diagnosed with the help of modern machinery while at Child Ventilator Unit has 5 beds in its ICU where children will be provided facility of ventilator and which was non-existent previously. Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal, accompanied by Pr0vincial Minister Shoaib Bukhari inaugurated the two units on Sunday. Talking to media later, Nazim Karachi said that since its inception, City Government has spent over Rs 1.25 billion on the purchase of modern machinery and establishment of blood bank and modern laboratory. However, he said, cooperation of philanthropists is required for providing better and quality medical facilities. He appealed to philanthropic people to extend financial cooperation with the spirit of service to people for providing more facilities at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. He pointed out that there had been no unit for diagnosis of diseases of hearing impairment at this Hospital by procuring modern machinery worth Rs 2.5 million. He said that for the first time private-public partnership has been established in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and philanthropists Khalid Ghauri and Javed Ghauri donated Rs 4 million for setting up Child Ventilator Unit while city government contributed Rs one million for the unit which has 5-bed ICU. However it would be expanded phase-wise. Nazim Karachi pointed out that it costs Rs 3000 a day for ventilator facility in private hospitals while Hq Parast city government is providing this facility for Rs 5 and this facility provided to children from today. Mustafa Kamal said that no funds are received from the Federal or provincial Governments but city government is meeting al these expenses from its resources. To a question he said that public confidence in Abbasi Shaheed hospital has restored and as against 215 patients visiting OPD in the past, their number as today stand at 5000.
