Lawyers stand divided over judges issue

ISLAMABAD The lawyers of the country have been divided over the issue of judges appointment in superior judiciary, as top legal brains, while talking to TheNation, watched a serious rift between Peoples Lawyers Forum and Lawyers Coordination Committee. The rumpus immediately prevailed over lawyers General Body meeting held here on Monday and it was witnessed that the legal fraternity was not on the same page while observing the strike here. They strongly believed that Federal Minister for Law and Justice Dr Babar Awan was responsible for the recent confrontation between the Presidency and the judiciary. Supreme Court Bar Association, President Qazi Muhmmad Anwar, confirmed to this reporter that Peoples Lawyers Forum and Lawyers Rabta Committee had serious rift over the issue of judges appointment. We wanted the Government to ensure implementation of rule of law but the lawyers of Peoples Lawyers Forum do not support us, even misguiding the Government, he said. Meanwhile, Barrister Ahmad Raza Kasuri said that the recent division, which could be observed in some parts of the country, among groups of lawyers, who chanted slogans against one another publicly, led the supervisors of laws to end their powers of unity in smoke. The scuffles erupted between opposing groups during the strike on Monday will marshal the facts towards disastrous conclusion, he said. While talking to TheNation, the noted lawyer Ikram Chaudhry said Dr Babar Awan was responsible for the whole situation, which might let the interference of Army in politics. He was of the view that the two groups of lawyers, who might not be on the same page regarding this act of the elected government, were backing up to force the Law Minister to quit his office admitting his inability to tackle legal issues. Concluding the whole debate and the issue of division between the two groups of lawyers, Raja Abdur Rehman Advocate admitted that the lawyers would not be united now as they were in the past. Lawyers were sacrificing for the reinstatement of Chief Justice of Pakistan in 2007-08 but the situation has changed now, he recalled.
