QUETTA/KARACHI The Pakistan Peoples Party held countrywide rallies in favour of President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday. In Quetta, a good number of PPP workers led by former provincial food minister Ali Madad Jattak took out a rally outside the Quetta Press Club to back Presidents decision regarding appointment of judges. The rally, which started from Sariab Road, culminated outside the Press Club after passing through various roads of the city. Charged PPP workers were carrying placards and banners bearing different slogans in favour of Zardari and they were shouting full throat slogans. Addressing the rally, Ali Madad Jattak and other speakers said that appointment of judges had been made on merit and criticising the Presidency for it was beyond comprehension. They said that it was President Zardari who reinstated Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry as Chief Justice of Pakistan and other judges. They said that Zardari had remained in prison for eight consecutive years and was brutally tortured but he never comprised on principles and faced all difficulties boldly. Criticising the PML-N leadership, they said that Nawaz Sharif could not face hard time during the regime of dictator Pervez Musharraf and left the country after striking a deal with him, leaving people and country in the lurch. They said that they respected the judiciary and its decisions but the verdicts should be based on justice. They vowed to frustrate all conspiracies against the elected government of PPP. Agencies add: Peoples Lawyers Forum (PLF) held a demonstration in Karachi in front of the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) in support of the decision by President Asif Ali Zardari regarding appointment of judges in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The demo was led by Vice President PLF Karachi division Hakim Ali Shaikh and was participated by PLF leaders and members including Abdul Karim Nizamani, Muhammad Arif Khan, Muhammad Saeed Abbasi, Abdul Samad Baloch, Qazi Bashir, Qazi Aman and others. They also protested against strike call and termed it an attempt to create a wedge between the lawyers. They were then invited to address the general body meeting of the KBA where PLF leader presented point of view of the lawyers wing of ruling PPP maintaining that notification issued by the Presidency was fully constitutional and in line with settled principles followed by the apex court in respect of appointment of judges. They also distributed copies of an appeal addressed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan praying to him to order the concerned courts and benches of superior courts to hear and adjudicate cases pending since years including one filed by Asghar Khan of defunct Tehreek-e-Istaqlal, Mehran Bank case, civil review petitions against Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif. In Hyderabad, PPP youth wing organised a rally in support to President Zardari, and burnt an effigy of Nawaz. Addressing the audience, provincial President of PPP Youth Wing Aajiz Dhamrah said that appointment of judges was according to seniority formula. He condemned Nawaz Sharifs statement against the President. In Peshawar, Women Wing of PPP NWFP held a rally to back President Zardari. President PPP NWFP Women Wing and Member of National Assembly Aasma Alamgir said governments decision over appointment of judges was in line with the Constitution and all governmental institutions were taken into confidence in this regard. On the other hand, PPP activists attacked PML-N camp in Bahawalpur, injuring two workers. Thousands of PPP supporters staged demonstration at Fawara Chock against burning of President Zardaris dummy. Two PML-N activists - Rana Sajid and Rashid Javed - were reportedly injured in this incident. Police later reached the scene and brought the situation under control.
