Pepco consoles consumers despite PSO threat

LAHORE - When Pakistan State Oil has threatened to halt supplies of furnace oil to power companies, Pakistan Electric Power Company ensures the consumers not to worry as Ministry has taken the issue. The PSO, which daily supplies about 23,000 metric tones furnace oil to power sector, has threatened to suspend supplies to Gencos from Feb 17, if Pepco failed to clear outstanding dues. However while a media briefing at Wapda house here on Tuesday, DG Pepco Muhammad Khalid said the ministry took the issue and the chief financial officer was in Islamabad to settle the matter. The Pepco has to pay Rs 33 billion to PSO, he added. Responding to a question, he said about 200MW consumed on lighting at Eid Meladun Nabi adding 'we will try our best of smooth supply during the Eid holyday. The generation on last 24 hours were noted 10540MW, demand remained 11660 thus total electricity shortfall was 1120MW, Khalid gave details. The KESC was given 690MW during the period, he said adding the hydel component added 4623MW, thermal shared 1596MW, IPPs provide 4259 and RPPs produced 62MW for the national grid. Tarbella and Mangla respectively added 2090MW and 776MW in the hydel component, the DG added. He was of the view that hydel generation would reach at 6000MW in coming days when the electricity demand would rise. The PSO, the spokesperson said was facing financial crisis as power utilities owed it Rs 153 billion.
