RAHIM YAR KHAN - Thousands of the citizens have been waiting for natural gas due to delay in laying of pipelines in different localities of the city by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), it has been learnt.

Reportedly, SNGPL district office sent a case to its Head Office Lahore on June 29, 2010 to lay a 3.9-km 8 inch gas pipeline from Thalli Chowk to Khwaja Fareed Government Post Graduate College to facilitate the areas of Satellite Town, Baber Colony, Jinnah Park, Muhajar Colony, Shahnawaz Colony, Hasan Colony, Sakhi Sarwar Colony, Hafiz town, Jeddah town and adjoining areas for proper pressure of gas.

The case was approved by the Head Office in December 2010. In the second phase of the project the gas pressure was divided in the areas including Model Town, Trust Colony, New Officers Colony, Businessman Colony, Haji Muhammad Colony and other areas. SNGPL District Deputy Chief Engineer Mubashar Habib said that the department had sent a letter to TMA on January 20, 2011 to acquire NOC for laying of the said pipelines but the TMA did not responded. SNGPL reminded the municipal authorities several times but they did not respond, he added.

Mubashar said he also sent a letter to DCO and informed him about the matter, adding that he also held several meetings with DCO and TMA officials but they did not issued the NOC.

Meanwhile, the TMA demanded Rs1,315,400 from SNGPL. The SNGPL forwarded the demand to its regional office and head office, but even after passing the period of one year no work could be started.

TMO Arshad Warraich said that the TMA had provided the estimate of restoration work to SNGPL, but it cannot allow SNGPL to start work without paying the said amount.

DCO Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi said that district administration has no authority to issue NOC and this is the responsibility of TMA. He said that he can coordinate with both departments to solve the problem.
