Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan of PPP and Ishaq Dar of PML-N were elected as Senators unopposed on Thursday.

No candidates of any party had submitted nomination papers for the two technocrat seats from Punjab except Aitzaz Ahsan and Ishaq Dar.

The former president Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), who is also PM Gilani’s counsel in contempt of court case, had filed his nomination papers on the seat for technocrats.

Aitzaz Ahsan, a leading jurist of the country and a former Interior Minister, had boycotted the last general elections on the call of Pakistan Bar Council in protest against sacking of superior court judges by the then military dictator. While Ishaq Dar is incumbent member of the Senate and retiring on March 12 after completing his six-year term.

Officials said the scrutiny process of documents filed by candidates for Senate elections was being carried out by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) across the country.

Moreover, Kamran Michel, who had filed his papers for the seat reserved for minorities, was also elected unopposed after a rival contender Shahzad Munshi withdrew his papers.
