Article 5 of the Establishment of the Office of Ombudsma (Wafaqi Mohtasib) Order, 1983, emphatically spells out the terms of appointment of the Ombudsman. It reads, ‘Ombudsman not to hold any other office of profit’. Mr. Salman Farooqui was recently appointed as Ombudsman. As Mr Faruqui also holds the office of Secretary General to the President, he is clearly not eligible to hold the office of the Ombudsman, There is no guarantee that this blatant violation of rule will be rectified. The British have a saying, ‘What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander’. When, in a country, a President holds two positions contrary to rule of law, who will question such a junior post? I request the Prime Minister Ashraf to take notice and annul Mr Farooqui’s appointment till such time as he resigns from his previous post which carries the right of remuneration for rendering of services.
