Dams do not consume water; they only store surplus flood water for use downstream. It is at the barrages that rivers get depleted where water is withdrawn through irrigation canals. It is not Tarbela dam which reduced the flow below Kotri, it is the 14 big canals which withdraw water at Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri barrages, leaving very little to flow below Kotri. In fact the province of Sindh received 33 percent more water after the construction of Tarbela dam. Sindh will get 37 percent from each dam that is built on the Indus River in the future, thereby getting more water after the construction of Kalabagh dam.
