UNITED NATIONS - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint following the killing by Indian troops of a Pakistani soldier who strayed over the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region.

Replying to a question at the regular noon briefing, the secretary-general's spokesman, Martin Nesirky, said the United Nations was aware of the incident and following the developments.

"The secretary-general calls on all concerned to exercise restraint and to resolve their issues peacefully," the spokesman said.

The Indian army claims the Pakistani soldier was killed in a gun battle on Thursday. Pakistan disputes this, saying the soldier had identified himself before being killed.
