HAFIZABAD: People’s Party Vice Chairman and former prime minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said that parleys with Taliban could not be successful unless terrorist activities by them are stopped. He was talking to the media at a marriage ceremony of the daughter of local PPP activists Khizar Hayat Mangat here on Saturday.
He said that peaceful conditions were inevitable for making the negotiations conducive but he regretted that since the start of negotiations numerous deadly suicide attacks had been carried which was causing concern among the nation. Moreover, he said that no direct negotiations between the government team and the Taliban had so far taken place. He said that the negotiations with the Taliban should have been started soon after the decision of the APC to start peaceful negotiations with them but these were delayed unnecessarily He could not say whether the belated negotiations would be successful or otherwise.
Replying to a question on the trial of General (r) Pervaiz Musharaf, he said that Article 6 should be applied to all those responsible for unconstitutional steps of October 12, 1999. Only targeting one person would be meaningless, he added. –Staff Reporter
