MANDI BAHAUDDIN/SARGODHA -  A delegation of sugarcane farmers visited Deputy Commissioner Hafiz Shaukat Ali and complained that the management of a local sugar mills was not paying them the officially fixed rate of Rs450 per quintal.

The DC called Shahtaj Sugar Mills Deputy Director Khalid and asked him to ensure payment of sugarcane at the officially approved rates. The mills deputy director said that according to the policy of the mills management, sugarcane now onward would be purchased at Rs400.

Negotiations went on between the farmers and the mills' deputy director and it was concluded that the mills would clear outstanding dues of farmers at Rs450 but from now onward, the sugarcane would be purchased at Rs400 per quintal.

They regretted that many of them were paid far lower prices of their sugarcane and now the mills owners had openly announced that they would not pay more than Rs400 per quintal.
