ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for Pakistan’s former ambassador to United States Husain Haqqani in the Memogate case.
Husain Haqqani on January 3, 2013 had left the country with the commitment to come back on four-day notice. The court had allowed him to go abroad. He, however, despite his undertaking did not come back and breached his commitment with the court. The court on June 4, 2013 had directed the executive to ensure his return to the country.
A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, was hearing a suo motu notice in the Memogate case.
Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana informed the court that DG Federal Investigation Agency, secretaries of Ministry of Information and Ministry of Interior held meetings with the american embassy officials to seek US government’s assistance to bring Haqqani back to Pakistan.
He said that if Haqqani had given an undertaking to the apex court that he would come back to Pakistan on the court notice but later failed to do so, then he had committed contempt of court.
Director General FIA Bashir Memon informed the court that they had sent a request to the Interpol Headquarters in France to issue a red warrant for Haqqani. The Interpol office confirmed they had received the request. He prayed to the court to issue an arrest warrant for Haqqani as it would help them bring back the ex-envoy.
The court, therefore, issued Haqqani’s arrest warrant.
