ISLAMABAD - The Federal Government on Saturday decided to dissociate DG FIA Waseem Ahmed from investigations into Haj scam and Interior Ministry forwarded names of three senior police officers to Prime Minister for selection of a new officer from the panel to supervise the ongoing probe into the scam. However, according to the new Terms of Reference (ToR) of the proposal, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will continue its probe into the mega corruption scandal. Earlier, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had directed the Government to consider disassociating FIAs Director General (DG) Waseem Ahmed from the investigations into the mismanagement of Haj affairs while showing its reservations over the way DG was following to probe the case. SC is hearing a plethora of complaints about corruption in Haj affairs. The sources in the Interior Ministry informed that a proposal in this regard had been sent to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani through Cabinet Secretariat and the apex court would be informed about this decision through Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP). However, the Interior Ministry has decided that FIA would continue its investigations into the scam and its Director Hussain Asghar will remain the head of the investigations team. Hussain Asghar is presently in Saudia Arabia to conduct further investigations into the scam. The Interior Ministry has named three senior police officer of Additional Inspector General (AIG) level including Sarmad Saeed, Wajid Durrani and Javed Ali Shah Bukhari in its proposal sent to Prime Minister. Sarmad Saeed is presently working as AIG training in Punjab and has also performed his duties as former IG (Inspector General) Northern Areas (Gilgit Baltistan). The officer is widely known for his impeccable character and integrity in his services in the police. Wajid Durrani is now posted in Sindh and has also worked as AIG of the province while Javed Bukhari has also served as IG Balochistan. Premier Gilani will give his final nod to the one name of the senior police officers among three names. According to the ToR of the proposal, the selected senior officer would supervise the probe and has been given the mandate to include any officer of police or any other investigation agency into the investigation team of his own choice. A seven member bench of SC headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry in its last hearing on January 11 had asked the Government to consider DG FIA keeping out of the inquiry observing that he was spoiling the case. The SC had asked Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq to consult the Government on the issue of disassociation of DG from the investigations of scam. SC had asked AGP to submit its report in this regard with the registrar within three days. Waseem Ahmed has also personally requested the court to disassociate him from the investigations saying that he was unable to grill the federal secretaries after summoning them in his office. He has informed the court that he had also written a letter to the Government in this regard.
