Forty two inmates have died in a fire that broke out at the Monastir prison in central Tunisia, the Tunisian official news agency TAP reported. The fire broke out during an attempted prison break on the part of some prisoners who took advantage of the security breach occasioned by the current situation in the country. Quoting the head of forensic medicine at the university hospital in Monastir, TAP reports that most of the prisoners died of asphyxiation while some died of their burns.
