LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that as we have made our defence strong by becoming atomic power, similarly, we will have to strengthen our economy by developing agriculture, livestock and other sectors. He said that Government College University was rendering invaluable services for promotion of education and it had produced prominent personalities who are playing important role for the development and progress of the country. Addressing an oath-taking ceremony of members of newly elected executive committee of Old Ravians Union at GC University on Saturday, the CM also announced a grant of Rs 5 crore for GC University. Provincial Education Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, MPAs, Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab, a large number of students who completed their education from GC University and teachers attended the ceremony. Shahbaz said had we been depending and developing our own resources for the last 63 years, today we would not have been depending upon foreign aid. He said that Pakistan had the honour of singular atomic power of Muslim Ummah but despite being atomic power, we were forced to take dictation from foreign. He said that we could not achieve our goal since creation of Pakistan and this was not that Pakistan for which our forefathers rendered sacrifices. Although this a difficult task yet it is not impossible and if we make hard work and honesty our motto, we can achieve our goal and can gain the status of dignified nation in the world. We will have to provide equal opportunities of promotion to all on the basis of hard work and abilities for the development and progress of the country, he added. He said that for the first time in the history of the country, a project of Daanish Schools had been launched for poorest students of backward areas in this regard and the first Daanish School had been inaugurated in Rahim Yar Khan. He said that promotion of education was essential for elimination of terrorism and these Daanish Schools would not only promote education in every nook and corner of the country but would also help in rooting out extremism. President of new executive committee of Old Ravians Union and renowned scientist Dr Samar Mubarik Mand addressing the function said, Today is the era of science and technology and we will have to equip our young generation with modern knowledge for safeguarding the future of the country. He said that our defence was strong but there was a need of strengthening the economy and we would have to develop our own resources for this purpose. Kamran Lashari and Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab also spoke on this occasion. Earlier, Chief Minister Punjab administered oath to the members of newly-elected executive committee of Old Ravians Union. He also gave away shields and souvenirs to Old Ravians.
