Pro-democracy demo in Lahore

LAHORE - In the wake of Supreme Court decision to arrest Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and others, members of civil society organisations and PPP activists gathered on The Mall on Tuesday and staged a protest demonstration against judiciary and in favour of democracy.
The protesters were of the view that democracy was the best system of governance and hence should not be rolled back through any means.   Local PPP leaders including Diwan Mohayyouddin, Dr Hasnaat Ahmad and Afnan But were part of the demonstration. President, Civil Society Network, Abdullah Malik, social workers- BG and Amna Malik- and lawyers’ representatives were also prominent among the protestors.
The participants were holding placards inscribed with slogans, ‘jamhooriat ko chalnain do’ (let the democracy function), jamhooriat bachao’ (save democracy) and ‘jamhooriat he behtareen nizaam hai’ (democracy is the best system). They also raised slogans against Dr Tahirul Qadri and the judiciary.
Speaking on the occasion, Abdullah Malik said that Dr Qadri’s unconstitutional demands were indicative of some conspiracy being hatched against democracy.
He described the move as uncalled for which had been initiated at a time when the country is bracing for transfer of power from one democratic government to another.
The PPP leaders grilled the judiciary, saying why only one party was being victimised while leaving others unaccounted for their actions.
