LAHORE – Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Syed Munawar Hasan on Tuesday said that the Supreme Court decision in the Rental Power case had been reserved since long and it was not correct to link it with Dr Tarhirul Qadri’s sit-in.

Commenting on the apex court verdict announced he called for immediate announcement of the election date and an interim government in order to bring the country out of the uncertain situation. He condemned attempts from certain quarters to make the Election Commission disputed and demanded more powers for the body. “Work on the correction of electoral lists should also be stepped up,” he said. He said that with the arrest of prime minister, his office would not fall vacant. This law point should be kept in mind. He urged the jurists to educate the masses about this delicate point. Secretary General JI Liaqat Baloch said that the Supreme Court verdict was in accordance with the law and the constitution. He said if the PPP still wanted to cling on to power, it should bring forth a new PM as Raja Pervez Ashraf had practically lost the office after the SC decision. He said that Dr Tahirul Qadri and his followers in Islamabad had the right to stress upon their demands which were in line with the law and the constitution. He said that in such a situation the democratic forces should remain alert so that no one could deprive them of democracy, judiciary and the constitution.
