RAWALPINDI – People belonging to all walks of life including lawyers, politicians, teachers, students, labourers and the civil society members hailed the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) for nabbing Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and 15 others for their corruption in rental power projects (RPPs) within 24 hours.

PM Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was accused of pocketing huge kickbacks to approve 19 RPPs while he was federal minister for water and power. The SCP ordered the authorities concerned to produce the 16 accused including PM Raja Pervaiz Ashraf while handcuffing them before the court on January 17, 2013.

The people demanded implementation of the order in its true letter and spirit. The lawyers said they would agitate if the government rejected SCP orders.

Talking to TheNation on Tuesday, Sardar Asmat Ullah, the hero of judges’ restoration movement, termed the landmark verdict of SCP as victory of people of Pakistan and justice. He said that government should obey the orders of apex court and arrest those who embezzled national kitty in pretext of RPPs. He said that Raja Pervaiz Ashraf was the main accused in the scam and he must bring to the book.

Sardar said that the PPP-led coalition government has created an epidemic like situation in the country as people were suffering badly owing to price hike, non-availability of gas, CNG, electricity and deteriorating law and order situation.

“The lawyers will chalk out their future line of action if the government rejected apex court orders” Asmat said in reply of a query. The legal fraternity was happy over this landmark decision of SCP, said Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) General Secretary Raheel Khan advocate in addition with all the accused must behind the bars.

He said that the whole country has been facing energy crisis because of RPPs corruption done by Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and his 16 other accomplices.

Khan was of view that it should also be probed as how Raja Pervaiz Ashraf who ever owned a shoe shop at Gujar Khan has become millionaire.

Awami Muslim League (AML) President and veteran politician Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed welcomed the decision saying the government had been making mocks of the court orders for last 9 months. Finally, SCP did its job as it has no other choice, he added.

PML-MNA Malik Abrar Ahmed maintained that his party supported the verdict. He said that it was the prime responsibility of every body to obey the country’s apex court without any hesitation. He said that the corrupt and accused should be punished.

The SCP laid down this verdict in the light of principles and justice. The corrupt and fraudsters should be put behind lock-ups, said former MPA of N league from Gujar Khan Chaudhry Muhammad Riaz while talking to this scribe.

He said that disobeying the SCP orders has become the habit of PPP led government, but, now Zardari and his cronies would have to implement court orders.

He said “Zardari is a big plunderer and appointing the thieves against all key posts who loot public money”.

Punjab Lecturers and Professors Association (PPLA) Rawalpindi Division President Professor Muhammad Ilyas Qureshi also termed the SC verdict a favor to people.

He said that only Supreme Court was providing relief to the public rather than the government. He said that PPP led government has hell bent upon depriving the people of all basic necessities of life.

He said that the government should arrest PM Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and get back the money from him he embezzled in RPPs.

Sajida Syed, a university student, also welcomed the apex court decision saying “The country has plunged into deep crises owing to corruption and bad governance. People were dying with hunger; youths are committing suicides owing to unemployment”. There should be strict action against the corrupt rulers and they should be punished.

A cobbler Baba Nazir at Lalkurti was in cheering mood with the decision of SCP in which it asked the law enforcement agencies to arrest corrupt Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and 16 of his accomplices.

He said that “I want to see the all the institutions of country corruption free. PM Raja Pervaiz Ashraf should surrender before police,” he said.

“It is a good decision which brought smiles on the faces of masses” said Riaz Janjua, a laborer adding that the rulers were looting people money with both hands. “I appreciate Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for taking action against the thieves and looters”, he said.
