ISLAMABAD - As many as 45 wind power projects of around 3200 MW capacity are under process and out of them 106MW projects are ready for commercial operation while another 150MW projects are under construction.
Commencement of commercial operation of 56MW FFC Wind Farm was the beginning of exploiting the wind potential of renowned GharoKeti Bandar Wind Corridor, an area that alone offers potential of 50,000MW. They said that the present govt added more generation in the national grid by completing thermal and small hydro plants. There was a gap between demand and supply and efforts were being made to change the energy mix to generate cheaper electricity by using indigenous resources like wind, coal and hydel.
The sources said that Pakistan has tremendous resources of wind, solar and hydro, but no one had attempted to utilize them.
The government was also working on other projects including “Waste to Energy”, “Small Hydro”, and “Sugar Co-generation” to generate electricity.
They said that in next year, at least ten more wind projects with an investment of over $2 billion were in pipelines.
