ECP launches voters’ registration drive

SIALKOT-The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has launched a campaign for the registration of new votes, cancellation of votes or their adjustment in new blocks in Gujranwala Division.
According to the senior ECP officials, about 550,000 votes would be verified while 1.5 million votes would be adjusted in the new blocks of Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Gujranwala districts.
The ECP also conferred the special powers of district registration officer to the district election commissioners (DECs) in the region.
Education departments' assistant education officers (AEOs) have been deputed as the assistant registration officers (AROs) with special duties for the campaign. It has also hired the services of the other senior officials from education and other department and deputed as the supervisors.
The senior ECP officials added that the ECP authorities were going door-to-door for the registration of votes, the deaths of the voters (if any) and adjustment of votes. They said that the ECP campaign would end on February 8, 2018.
The fresh data would be entered into the related official records within 10 days by the ECP officials after final verification. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has also established 200 special display centres in Gujranwala Division to display the new voter lists after compiling the fresh data at local level.
The special display centres have been set up at the government offices, schools and colleges to facilitate the local people and these centres would be functional within next couple of days, said the senior ECP officials.
No clue of stolen
body of faith healer
Police remained unable to recover the dead body exhumed and stolen from the graveyard of village Kishaneywali here about 10 days ago.
According to the FIR (15/2018) lodged at Sialkot Saddr police station under section 297 PPC by graveyard's caretaker M Islam, some 20 accused including Adnan, Ashfaq, Hussain, Muhammad Amjad, Papu Malang and Mumtaz Bibi, armed with wooden and hockey sticks, iron rods and guns, had stolen the dead body of local faith healer Sufi Bashir Ahmed after illegally exhuming his grave from village's graveyard Kishaneywali-Sialkot on January 06.
The FIR revealed that the accused also desecrated the dead body and took it away to an unknown place for burial.
The police said that the main reason behind the nasty incident was the issue of burial of the dead body amongst his followers, who wanted to bury him at their desired place.
But, he was laid to rest in local graveyard at village Kishaneywali-Sialkot some six months ago as per his last will.
Police said that the police were busy in searching the dead body. No accused has yet been arrested by police nominated in this FIR.
The incident created panic and harassment among the local people especially the followers.
A large number of the local people and his followers expressed grave concern over the incident. They demanded early recovery of the body and arrest of all the accused.
