Press Enter for 'new democracy

Social media or the internet is growing in use with every passing day. Even the most underdeveloped countries have internet access now and their people are surfing the net in their droves. Unlike other media, which require some degree of tech savvyness, the internet requires no special expertise or thorough knowledge of anything. It is also a windfall of democracy, a system that provides people with the chance to express their aspirations freely and often, even noisily. We live in a country which has had a lot of dictators hindering the development of a free and fair media but now that we have democracy, internet has become the primary source of news and views on our desired subjects. Even the traditional media sources are now using it as their favoured new platform to reach the people. With the advancement in technology, new concepts and ideas are floating on the web. The social media websites and innumerable blogs, for instance, allow people to interact with the whole global community. All these advancements have empowered the people to flash their message across to their elected governmentsa development that is likely to strengthen democracy. -ZULFIQAR HAIDER, Islamabad, July 15.
