Govt will fulfil its promises: Sherry

KARACHI - Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ms. Sherry Rehman, has said that the government would soon fulfil the promises made with the people and would come up to their expectations. She was talking to media persons at the Karachi Airport on Sunday on arrival from Islamabad. The Minister asked the people, the lawyers and those who were part of the democratic struggle, to have confidence in their elected government and 'Inshallah everything will be on time and nothing will be put in the cold storage'. She said that the country at the moment faces financial and political challenges and that the government would move on to tackle both of these and would soon fulfil the promises made with the people. Replying a question about the lawyers' long march, Ms. Sherry Rehman said that it augurs well that such a big event concluded in a peaceful manner. The government facilitated the process in order to maintain peaceful conditions during the long march. Some PPP workers had also participated. The PPP Secretariat arranged 'Sabeels' and PPP Co-Chairman Senator Asif Ali Zardari sent 300 'deghs' of food. She said that it is the right of the democratic forces to raise their voice and it was the responsibility of the government to listen to them and accept their genuine demands besides providing protection to the people and the international community in the Islamabad Capital Territory. The Minister said that we accomplished all these three targets very well and the entire world is appreciating this. Ms. Sherry Rehman pointed out that the lawyers' community had signed a code of conduct with us. She said that a common constitutional package had been with our allies and with their consultation a clause was included in the Finance Bill and accordingly the strength of the judges has been increased. The Minister said that as this has the financial implications so therefore it has been included in the budget. She stated that this was a promise of the PPP with the peoples as well as the allies. Ms. Sherry Rehman said that as far as the PPP is concerned there is no gap between what it says and what it acts. She said that Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for the cause of reconciliation and peaceful transition. The Minister said that owing to the acumen and sagacity of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto general elections were held in the country and now there is an elected government in place. She also asked the people to have confidence in their representative government and 'Inshallah everything will be on time and nothing will be put in the cold storage'. To a question, the Minister said that we will take our allies along. She said that the PML-N has also been our ally in the Charter of Democracy. Ms. Sherry Rehman said that the PPP is in the government now and the promises it has made with the people and has right to work in its own way. She said that to fulfil its promises with the people PPP government will not disappoint the people and will come up to their expectations. The Minister said that at the moment the government is busy getting passed the federal budget which is a constitutional requirement.
