EASTBOURNE (AFP) Frances Aravane Rezai sent defending champion and top seed Caroline Wozniacki to a shock 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 first-round defeat at the Eastbourne International on Tuesday. Another former champion Polands Agnieszka Radwanska also crashed out, the fourth seed and 2008 winner beaten by Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 7-6 (7/2), 6-1. Two more titleholders remain in the womens draw of the mixed ATP-WTA event, with Kim Clijsters and Svetlana Kuznetsova playing opening matches later at Devonshire Park. Giant killer Rezai, winner on clay last month in Madrid over Venus Williams, came up trumps in her first career meeting with Wozniacki, who stood second in the world until being replaced by Williams after the French Open. Wozniacki was playing her first match on grass since the Wimbledon fourth round last summer. Rezai, a semi-finalist on grass last week at Birmingham, pounded 10 aces past the Dane in a victory lasting one and three-quarters hours. The unseeded Rezai, ranked 19th, will play for a quarter-final place in the Wimbledon tune-up event against Maria-Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain.
