Tumult in NA over Kalabagh Dam issue

ISLAMABAD Awami National Party on Tuesday verbally clashed with both PML-N and PML-Q over the issue of construction of Kalabagh Dam. The post-budget debate of the National Assembly resumed in the chair of Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza. Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid) MNA, Bushra Rehman, while addressing the House desired the construction of Kalabagh Dam, saying that it was her dream to spot construction of Kalabagh Dam which would definitely become true soon. She added that the day was near when Kalabagh Dam would be a ground reality. MNAs from Awami National Party stood up on her remarks and launched a strong protest and chanted slogans against Kalabagh Dam. Haji Pervaiz Advocate while leading the ANP Parliamentarians commented that Kalabagh Dam would be constructed over their dead bodies. On this occasion, the PML-Q MNAs led by Raza Hayat Hiraj expressed their solidarity with Bushra Rehman and chanted pro-Kalabagh Dam slogans. Following their footprints, Abid Sher Ali and Hanif Abbasi, both from Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), also stood up and supported PML-Q on the issue. Rohail Asghar, the Deputy Speaker at that time, interfered and asked the members to calm down and after that the tense situation diffused to a greater extent. When Pervaiz Advocate following the direction of the Deputy Speaker took the mike for debate, the members from both the factions of PML restricted him not to speak until chanting a slogan in favour of Pakistan. Pervaiz continuing his words mentioned that ANP raised the slogan for Pakistan during the proceedings of the first session of the National Assembly. Three out of the four provinces, he said, polled their votes against the construction of the Dam and due to this ANP was opposing the specific dam. After the interference of Chief Whip PPP Syed Khurshid Ali Shah, the situation calmed down in the House and the mike was returned to Buhsra Rehman who resumed her speech. She lashed the Government for presenting a flopped budget, saying there was nothing in the budget for the public. She wished President Asif Ali Zardari to make an announcement soon for the construction of Kalabagh Dam just like he had announced the renaming of NWFP as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier, former governor Balochistan Abdul Qadir Baloch said there was no role of the Parliament in budget making and the document was planned and prepared by the bureaucrats. Hitting the Government hard over the continuous incidents of target killings in Balochistan, he mentioned that law enforcement agencies had failed to maintain law and order in the province. He criticised the current status of Afghan Transit Trade Agreement and said that the Government adopted no measures to restrict ATT. Syed Zafar Ali Shah, during his speech, disclosed the continuation of a cold war between the Governor and the Chief Minister of Sindh, urging that former should retake the oath. He also lashed the Government for the current price hike and termed the budget insufficient to meet the needs of the people.
