Mother still on life support: Hasan Nawaz

Lahore/LONDON - Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's son, Hasan Nawaz has said that his mother Kalsoom's vitals are stable but she is still on life support — 24 hours after she suffered a cardiac arrest.

"Begum Kalsoom’s vitals are stable but she is still on life support and sedated," the former premier's son told Geo News on Friday.

“The fact that the cardiac arrest happened while she was in the intensive care unit (ICU) helped doctors. There has been no internal bleeding. We are praying for her recovery," Hasan said.

Kalsoom was shifted to ICU of a London hospital late Thursday after her condition deteriorated. Sources said she had collapsed in ICU after a cardiac arrest and since then, she has been unconscious since.

The surgeon treating Kalsoom said her condition worsened because of clotting in her lungs.

He said yesterday her heart had stopped functioning for at least 10 minutes and the former first lady's condition is critical.

Hussain Nawaz said his mother's condition isn't out of danger yet. He said the doctors believed she suffered cardiac arrest due to the presence cancer clot in blood, adding that physicians were observing her condition.

Meanwhile Suleman Shehbaz and his mother also arrived at the clinic to visit Kalsoom.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif will leave for London today (Saturday) after offering Eid prayers.

On Wednesday, the wife of the former premier was readmitted to hospital and was taken to the emergency unit last night. A day earlier, Maryam Nawaz and senior PML-N leaders took to the social media to request prayers for Kalsoom. "Ami [mother] had a sudden cardiac arrest this morning when we were on the flight and is in ICU and on the ventilator since. Earnest request for duas," Maryam wrote.
