Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has suspended Muzaffargarh District Police Officer (DPO) Usman Akram Gondal from service and transferred and made OSD Dera Ghazi Khan Regional Police Officer Abdul Qadir Qayyum for dereliction of duty while Saddr DSP Mian Asghar and Investigation officer/SI Rana Zulfiqar were arrested.

The Punjab CM took the action during his visit to the residence of Aamna Bibi, a student of Intermediate first year who died after self-immolation in protest against the police for faulty investigation of her gang rape case in Bait Mir Hazar Khan, district Muzaffargarh.

The chief minister met parents of the deceased girl and offered his heartfelt condolence over the tragic death of their daughter. He assured them of justice and gave a cheque of Rs0.5 million to the bereaved parents as financial assistance.

Talking to the mediamen at Bait Mir Hazar Khan, CM Shahbaz Sharif declared that the police excesses and injustice was a slap in the face of the democratic government. He asked the policemen not to entertain any intercession or pressure of MPAs, MNAs and politicians, especially in false complaints or criminal cases.

The chief minister pledged that culprits involved in the gang-rape case would not go unpunished and pledged that this case would be tried in Anti-Terrorism Court. “Protection of fundamental rights of the masses was bounden duty of the State which ‘apparently’ is not being discharged,” the Punjab CM regretted, adding that the police must be committed to dispensation of justice without any fear or pressure and they should always work with sincerity to uphold the law. He said that Police should perform its duties according to law and they should not violate the law even on the instruction of chief minister. Punjab Inspector General of Police Khan Baig and Additional IG Khaliq Dad Lak accompanied the chief minister. Shahbaz Sharif expressed his dissatisfaction over the poor performance and lack of confidence of the Muzaffargarh Police and directed the officials to improve their performance. Punjab Social Welfare Minister Syed Haroon Sultan, MNA Basit Sultan, MPA Kiswar Karim Langrial, MPA Khan Muhammad Jatoi, MPA Hamad Nawaz Tipu, City Press Club President Dr Khalid Mehmood Zafar Chaudhry and others notables were also present on the occasion.
