Outrageous

Discrimination on the basis of class issosharp in Pakistan that it exists even in public libraries. People of higher social status are given special treatment in the libraries. Seats are reserved for them in air-conditioned rooms. Special privileges and facilities are provided to them by library staff. Iexperienced a shameful incident in Quaid-i-Azam library, Lahore on Tuesday at 11:25AM. A former education minister Ch. Akhtar Saeed, with his servant, insisted that I should leave thechair immediately. I was studying since early morning. That perhaps was my only crime. Iwas still reluctant to obey the 'order when the staff of the library approached me to vacate the chair for the big shot who they said was 'addicted to that chair. Ifelt humiliated and was utterly bewildered by this catch-22 situation. I did not know what to do. My question is that when will treatment of people on the basis of their politico-economic status, even in public libraries, end in this country? This unfortunate class discrimination is rampant in our society. Thisvenom can be dangerous for the already decaying social fabric of highly divided Pakistani society. MIAN AZHAR ABBAS, Lahore, May 12.
