ISLAMABAD - Widening the gulf between the anti and pro government lawyers, Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Saturday suspended the license of President, Peshawar High Court Bar Association, Latif Afridi Advocate.   PBC has also restrained Afridi from functioning as President, Peshawar High Court Bar Association and from operating the Accounts of the High Court Bar Association. Afridi is one of the prominent leaders of lawyers' movement seeking restoration of deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other open- minded judges. The decision against Latif Afridi was taken here in a meeting of the Executive Committee of the PBC, held here at the Council's office with Ch Muhammad Ashraf Wahlah in the chair. Objecting to issuance of a show-cause notice by the President, Peshawar High Court Bar Association to Vice Chairman, PBC, Haji Syed Rehman, the Executive Commtitee observed, "The so-called show-cause notice contains highly objectionable and derogatory remarks not only against the Honourable Vice-Chairman, Pakistan Bar Council Haji Syed Rehman but also against the Pakistan Bar Council itself and its members". The meeting further noted that in the contents of the notice, President, Peshawar High Court Bar Association not only exceeded his authority but has also misused his office as President, High Court Bar Association against the apex body of lawyers, its Vice-Chairman and members, which is tantamount to gross misconduct. The Executive Committee has also referred the matter to Disciplinary Committee of the Pakistan Bar Council for consideration and taking appropriate disciplinary action against him. Afridi was also barred from operating the accounts of Peshawar Bar. Latif Afridi had lambasted Rehman for ditching the lawyer's movement in his notice. President, Supreme Court Bar Association (PSCBA) Ali Ahmed Kurd has severely condemned the cancellation of license of President Peshawar High Court Bar Association Latif Afridi. Addressing an urgent news conference called in wake of the decision, Ali Ahmed Kurd has called for a countrywide strike of lawyers on Monday to condemn the act of PBC against Latif Afridi and said Pakistan Bar Council was not entitled to cancel licenses of lawyers. Coming down hard on the pro-government lawyers in PBC, Kurd said only a bunch of seven lawyers have grouped together to create rift in the lawyers struggle and were misusing their office authority. Kurd, however, said the struggle of lawyers for ensuring supremacy of the Constitution and rule of law in the country will continue till its ultimate success.
