LAHORE - Holders Pakistan WAPDA once again occupied second spot when they struck once in each half to beat HBL 2-0 at Lahore's Railway Stadium. The other Pakistan Premier Soccer League match saw PMC failed to complete double over PIA and suffered 1-2 defeat despite getting early lead at PMC Ground, Faisalabad. WAPDA-HBL tie was the clash between two teams who played the final of National Soccer Championship in 1983 and 1991 when their current coaches - Khalid Butt (WAPDA) and Yousuf Khan (HBL) - were players of their organization. With both win full backs in tremendous touch, WAPDA gave no room to the rivals in 2-0 win. Both were in action inside six minutes. Right-full Muhammad Shahid, gold medallist in SAF Games two year ago, sent a scorching drive past HBL's keeper in the 48th seconds only to see the ball rattled the cross bar. Gujranwala-born left full back Akram Masih came into action when he opened the scoring in the 6th minute. He timed his jump to perfection when striker Zahid Hameed, skipper of Pakistan in SAFF championship 2008, swept the ball in from a corner. The bankers made their first positive move in the 21st minute but WAPDA's keeper Abdul Aziz blocked Zakir Lashari's effort. Akram might have scored his second in the 42nd minute but his close-range header smacked the left post. WAPDA led 1-0 at interval. Shakir Hussain-led HBL went all out for equalizer in second session but Lashari, Khayal Muhammad, Ibrahim failed to create impression on WAPDA's wing full backs and central defenders Naveed Akram and Ishfaq Ahmed. Spearhead Arif Mehmood sealed the fate of the match in the 88th minute when he raced onto substitute Khuda Bakhsh's ball and sliced the ball past Sajid on second attempt. It was Arif's 12th goal of the event. WAPDA collected healthy 39 points from 19 matches while HBL recorded 28 points from 23 games. Meanwhile, SAF Games 2006 gold winner Shakir Lashari raised his tally to 14 when he snatched lovely winner against PMC. The home team, who caused sensational win over PIA in first leg at Karachi, went into early lead when striker Bashir Ahmed slammed the ball in with stopwatch showing 19 minutes. PIA, down 0-1 at interval, played the game with authoritative rhythm and reduced the arrears through central defender Haji Muhammad in the 52nd minute. Shakir Lashari struck the winner in the 78th minute and he is now four goals behind leading hitmen - Muhammad Rasool (KRL) 18 Goals.
