SHEIKHUPURA - A large number of basic health units and rural health centres here are facing shortage of trained staff, medicines and medical equipment including oxygen cylinders, sterilisers, wheelchairs and stretchers.

A survey conducted by TheNation on Thursday revealed that more than Health Centres operational in the district are in a shambles and unable to provide healthcare facilities to the local inhabitants. In village Vern, some 14 kilometers away from here, the BHU and RHC building is lacking doors, windows and furniture.

Moreover, the staffers posted in the said health centre are facing a lot of problems. One of the staffer said that a few months ago, the centre's transformer was stolen thus they were facing problems during sterilisation. A villager, Boota, said that due to lack of interest of the health officials, a large number of local people have to visit private hospitals that are fleecing patients through heavy charges.

On the condition of anonymity, a health official said that the EDO health and his team members were working only in papers and they do not visit rural areas to check the BHU and RHC but charge expenses without proper visits. The local people demanded that the secretary health , DG health and DCO Zahid Akhtar should resolve the problem.
