ISLAMABAD: The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) discussed the Protection of Women Rights Bill in a meeting.

During the meeting Nikkah and engagement ceremonies were discussed. The council chairman Maulana Sheerani said, “Gap between engagement and Nikkah helps both partners understand each other and reduces chances of divorce.”

Samia Raheel, a member of the council said,”girls who get their Nikkah done early with boys residing abroad, do not know their partners as they need documents to apply for immigration. This increases cases of divorce,” she said.

“Engagement is not equivalent to Nikkah,” said Allama Iftikhar Naqvi. “It is only a promise for Nikkah, therefore the Islamic Law allows the girl and boy to break off their engagement.”
